Wendy: One Day Chief Constable, Beach Lover and Devoted Devourer of the Tartan Literati

I’m not certain how many people have been photographed outside Glasgow in this project, but there aren’t many. Wendy chose Lunderston Bay on the Clyde just outside Gourock. The day was grey and cloudy but at least not yet raining although it did rain heavily a few hours later! Wendy’s red/strawberry blonde hair was really nice against the characteristic sandstone rock of the area and so when I saw the line of sandstone rocks running down to the Clyde I suggested lying on them to accentuate the line in the seascape. Usually these slightly quirky ideas are fun but don’t quite make it. Today, this was my favourite. Wendy’s relaxed confidence and slightly appraising look mixed with the landscape she is so fond of are a winner. The wide angle zoom makes a rare début here, don’t expect to see it for many portraits, but sometimes we have to break our patterns.

Tommy: Bar Manager, engineer and wizard with the tea-leaves.

This picture was taken by a wall with this great graffiti on it. I thought the wall with its bright colours went well with Tommy’s red top. Oddly the perspective and the bright yellow should draw your eye away from the subject, (and they do briefly), but his striking dark looks blending intriguingly with the darker part of the wall demand your attention. The fact that his face shouldn’t command your attention against the yellow, but does, really emphasises his presence.

I visited Tommy in his garden while he and his family were having a barbecue. The light was very direct sunlight and had a lot of dappling due to shining through trees and hedges at the side of Tommy’s lovely garden in Garrowhill in Glasgow. Tommy’s son held my small reflector close to dad’s left hand cheek to even out the sunlight coming high from his right. Adding to the challenge, Tommy had to sit back a little more than was natural to avoid dappled shadows on his face. It speaks volumes for what a relaxed and easy guy he is that none of these inconveniences ruffled him: Result!

28mm: ISO 400: f2 1/160th sec, (Handheld, remote flash)
Sigma 28 f1.8

Tom: Cool engineer, Man of the Desert and More Patient than an Octogenarian

Taken at the back of the Kelvingrove museum. There are little doorways with these great brushed metal shutters over them after closing time and Tom and I liked the look of the metal backdrop. The trouble is there was no real natural light as it was all on the other side of the building and we were in a small totally enclosed doorway. I asked a friend to hold the small Canon 430 flash to Tom’s left hand side in the tight space and to cover it with my small white umbrella to diffuse and soften the light. I was keen to get a graduated lighting effect with Tom, and I accentuated this with the “graduated filter” effect in lightroom dropping exposure by about 1.0 from the left. If you look in Tom’s glasses you can see the reflection of my umbrella-flash.

I really like Tom’s male version of the Mona-Lisa expression; is he smiling at you, or have you defaulted on one too many payments and he’s about to make you an offer you can’t refuse?

Tina: Artist, Executive and Photographer

This was so much fun to do! Tina’s artistic eye and knowledge of portrait photography made this a real two-way job. We set up the shot together, discussed the test shot together, changed some colours to overcome problems, and then had fun photographing. The window was on the right of the picture, and we had a reflector behind Tina to fill in the right hand side of her face a little bit. I love the bold colours and earthy wooden tones mixed together; Tina’s boldly colourful art demanded a colourful treatment. Tina’s art is bold and impressive and I was really taken by it.

Tich: Driver, Graphic Designer and West End Lover

This turned out to be my shortest meeting yet. Tich was available at short notice, but had to leave a friend alone while we did the photos; speed was essential. We walked 100 metres along from our meeting place to a bar that he frequents, and I instantly loved the blue wall against his green clothing. The light was low and warm, and from behind me. One of those rare pictures that was easy to do; it more or less took itself. I think Tich looks totally cool here and if Puma want to use this image for their next campaign, I’m sure Tich and I will be happy to cut a deal! :-)

Suzanne: Part Time Waitress, Silversmith and Kind Sister.

Suzanne is an artist and Jeweller, and so was fabulous to work with; I wanted her opinion on composition and she was happy to join in. Between her adorable little sis joining in and the artistic second opinion the session was a delight for me. We found a little corner of a ruined building with flaking paint and ruined walls just high enough to block out the increasingly direct sunlight. Little sis kindly stretched her arms as high as she could to hold a wireless flashgun about eye level with a diffusing umbrella to Suzanne’s right. I pushed the saturation a bit to accentuate the green paint flakes against Suzanne’s shirt. The pleasant and fun atmosphere generated by Andrew and Suzanne(trying to make each other laugh) has made a lovely and relaxed picture of Suzanne easy to achieve.
