Emma, Alison and Shona

This is the result of my recent practice shoot with my friend Emma and her friends Shona and Alison. (Shona, Alison and Emma left to right). I have asked my friend Wendy, one of my 100 portraits subjects to assist in my forthcoming wedding shoot for Phil and Harvie. We thought it would be good to have a practice run with the off-board flash, and my new pocket wizard transmitter to make sure we could work together slickly on the big day. Emma and her friends chose a lovely spot off the Rosneath Peninsula in Argyll, at Cove. The evening was really cold and windy, but we had fun regardless.

These are some group pictures, showing the girls in their best girl-band mode.

In this one, we put the low, cloud covered sun behind the group and used fill flash from the front. This one will be for the album cover.

undefined

Unfortunately it all went a little bit Abba here. Not a problem in itself, but these helpful subjects are a bit young for that…

undefined

We thought we would grab a few individual pictures of the girls before they froze in the wind. Emma smiling beautifully, as she pretty much always does.

undefinedundefined

Alison taking up the girl-band theme again.

undefined

I love this one against Loch Long with Alison’s 150 watt smile!

undefined

The beach got too cold and we retreated to the local country house hotel. The cold wind became less of a problem, although the wind blowing in pretty much every direction at once ensured that every second picture had a strand of hair across someone’s face; this one somehow didn’t…

undefined

Just before we abandoned from cold and strengthening wind, we grabbed a few of Shona. I just love the classic, dreamy look here. It was just crying out for sepia. Shona is just demanding a part in something Jane Austenish here.

undefined

We finally tried a few with Shona overlooking the loch, but the wind was a nightmare. In frustration, I asked her to hold her hair to stop it covering her face, and by one of those happy accidents, she looked amazing, relaxed and natural.

undefined

Thanks so much for helping girls. We certainly had fun, and the pictures look great; now who is going to be the lead singer, and who is going to write the songs?

Wendy’s help was great. Not only was she a fabulous assistant, but she will do some second-shooting at the wedding too. (Wendy was on my recent portrait workshop, and takes some great people shots). Wendy took pictures on this shoot as well, and we will post them next, with her own comments on the experience.

This shot was just Wendy helping out while I checked the background, and light quality. I kind of liked it anyway, so couldn’t resist including it. (Inverkip power station chimney vaguely visible for those who care).

undefined

Thanks Wendy.

Baby Lucy and Family

Baby Lucy turned one a few weeks ago; it was inevitable that the stylish young lady of today would have to have a celebratory photoshoot. Naturally I was happy to oblige with the clicking duties.

Here’s Baby Lucy with her proud and lovely mum!

undefined

However, you can’t always share the limelight when you’re a big girl of one!

undefined

“Is my hair allright?”

undefined

“I’m not sure the bow was really me mum? Maybe I should just rip it off”?

undefined

“So are you getting my eyes camera-monkey”?

undefined

“What do you mean by catching flies in the last picture, just get on with it; stylist, make-up, where are you”?

undefined

Can you guess where mum is in the following pictures? A little photographer’s trick for the not-quite-walking baby?

undefinedundefined

Even a tiny starlet can only take so much of the paparazzi, Mum and Dad move in to share the limelight and take some heat off…

undefined

Faithful family hound Beau, Bo or Bow, I really should check, was keeping a watchful presence over little sis.

undefined

While the flash and background were out Mum consented to having a solo shot. I’m sure you will agree with me that not to do so would have been a missed opportunity for my blog readers.

undefined

And Dad has to consent too once Mum has set the pace. I don’t often notice this kind of thing, despite nodding dutifully on occasion, but doesn’t Lucy look like Dad?

undefined

And finally, the background put away, a few candid shots of Lucy relaxing after a hard shoot.

undefinedundefined

“you’ll never hold me here copper! Ain’t no prison built I can’t spring from!”

undefined

“Until that cake with the file baked in arrives, maybe someone could just lift me over, what’dya’say, go on…”

undefined I hope Baby Lucy likes these and they are never used to embarrass her in front of a boyfriend when she’s eighteen. Well don’t blame me Lucy, it’s out of my hands now, better be nice to Mum and dad..

Big thanks to Julie for being a brilliant assistant on this shoot.

Moira

I’m just back from a great weekend in Liverpool and Manchester to see Roger Waters performing the Wall; amazing gig. I went with my friend Jay and stayed with his family. This wonderful woman is his mum.

Bill

Here is one of the elder statesmen of Argyll and Bute Education. In addition you are seeing one of the presenters of Argyll FM; Bill has an encyclopaedic knowledge of classical music and a wry humour in presenting it. I was lucky enough to catch him during the unveiling of an art collection in Inveraray.
