HB dozing with headphones

IMG_6014-2

HB’s mum bought her these very pink (volume limited) headphones for a Christmas present. Tonight I did the bedtime story and then I allowed her to listen to her beloved Disney Frozen for the first time (no pun intended for other Frozen fatigued parents) on her Tesco Hudl tablet. When I checked after the usual two “dad I need (insert manufactured child put-off-sleep-need here) calls, and moved to the I’ll check on you in 5 then the music goes off” visits, this was the sleeping image I found…

My new 40mm f2.8 pancake lens was on my carry-around 500D body so I crept in in nightlight conditions, set the controls to the artificially boosted ISO 12800 to get 1/25th of a second handheld. The fact that the centre spot actually focus-locked in such low light amazed me! Anyway, a three minute adjustment and noise reduction session in Lightroom and here it is!

When I did this I was 9 years old, (she isn’t quite 3), and I was listening to radio Luxembourg!

Seamill Beach

Yesterday I found myself with my small child heading out to find a beach. Her kind Grandmother has taken her often to the beach and so when I make the mistake of asking HB what she wants to do, “the beach” is a scarily frequent reply.  I racked my brains to think of a nearby one with sand, and recalled one at Seamill in Ayrshire, between Largs and Ardrossan. It turns out to have been a good choice, HB approved!

So much in fact that she got straight into the Clyde to sample the seaweeds.

P1010210

Of course, wrecking her clothes and freezing herself was not confined to your actual Firth of Clyde, no, ponds can allow good splashing too!

P1010193

It was a very photographically challenging day, as the sun was very direct and low. it produced some horrible contrast levels on HB’s face. Pictures from behind HB were easier to get the contrast correct on.

P1010227

I have to tell you HB’s mum may never allow her out with me again having seen this picture. This is the same child who wouldn’t wade in on a sunny day on her first beach visit; obviously a fear that she has confronted.

P1010216

But enough of the frivolity of the watery amusements! This child came her to dig things….

P1010197

And of course to collect shells!

P1010231

On the face of it this was a very bleak and very windswept beach, and I wasn’t sure it wouldn’t be too cold for her, but she could have spent hours contemplating the oddest little details.

P1010230

The happy face says “good place this”!

P1010212

And finally, red shovel modelled here by young beach equipment model Hannah!

P1010186

This was done with my Panasonic G3 which is so delightfully compact that I can keep it in my messenger-bag at all times. I mostly used its Electronic Viewfinder, and while it isn’t perfect, it is more than pleasant to use, even with bright direct light, (the kind that was killer to drive the car in). I find it very usable, and its handling is lovely. I must observe though that its menu is pants, I suppose I am used to the simple Canon menu system, but even allowing for that, it is horribly all over the place! The kit lens, is perfectly serviceable, but I think it lacks real magic, and I think the camera and its sensor seem capable of coping with some magic! I would really like to get a roughly standard view prime lens to live on this camera, I think it could become a go-to with some hint of bokeh available.

Hannah at Nardini’s

This has been an interesting week. I got hold of a Panasonic G3 Micro Four Thirds Camera, and Hannah had her first proper ice cream at Nardini’s in Largs! I am always interested in having a camera that is compact enough to carry with me but one that can still produce good images. Anyone who follows my blog will know that I dabbled with a Sony NEX 5 recently, and loved its image quality, but I sold it after a while  as it didn’t have a viewfinder. I just find as a DSLR user, that I can’t easily work on the screen at the back of a camera. There are times when I like it, like macro shots on a tripod, but for portraits, no! This camera was reduced to 159 pounds from its release price of  600 pounds or so in 2011 so I thought, “it has an electronic viewfinder, a multi-position screen, and looks like a mini DSLR; its reviews are outstanding so I thought why not try it”? It throws in my bag at about half of the weight of one of my main Canon DSLR’s, and handles really well. I only have the kit zoom lens with it, but my first impressions are good of the G3 and the smaller-than my-DSLR-but-still-bigger-than-a-compact-by-far-sensor are very favourable. The camera is serious but fun in a casual package; a proper review later!

It was in my very casual messenger bag when Julie and I took HB to Nardini’s. She is two and a half so ice-cream is the very essence of living to her. She got to pick from the very pictorial menu and the results when they arrived seemed to satisfy her. She chose something in the “chocolate marshmallow dream” line. Here she is waiting!

P1010097

Here is the beginning of the crime scene. HB loves Charlie and Lola and for those of you who know that very magical childrens’ book series, you might recognise Lola’s sideways eyes in this picture.

P1010118

Even through the windows of Nardini’s, HB had clocked the bouncy castle on the promenade. It turned out that there were multiple sources of toddlertainment and parental nausea. Mum, who has the maniacal love of the species and sadly major-league travel sickness, still sacrificed personal comfort to accompany HB on the rides. Check the sheer happiness of that wee girl on the teacups with mum! The bizarrely wielded paper is the  receipt for our Nardini’s visit which HB decided was the-most-important-possesion-of-her-life for no fathomable reason. Parents of two year olds will recognise the syndrome:-)

P1010134

The ‘beach buggy’ ride which stripped Julie of all dignity and moved her to the suburbs of barfville! Greater love hath-no-mum. HB delighted, or “chuffdles” as we like to say.

P1010131

The rides are over and the final treat of the day begins for HB. Mum recently bought her a scooter, and we thought this would be a great chance for her to have her first shot of it. HB has shown no facility for physical activity so far, and generally tumbles on the spot if she looks in another direction too quickly. To the parental astonishment, she figured the scooter in 5 minutes with little prompting, and spent some serious time playing on it without falls and with some surprising flair! She even wanted to be photographed which is not a normal HB request.

P1010163This final one shows the fun that can be had with the fold-out screen of the G3 which was held at ground level in a way that could not be done with the viewfinder. HB confident and happy with the new toy.

P1010154The camera is really good fun. I could have got better pictures with my Canon DSLR’s and fast primes, but this kit lens and pocket-rocket Panasonic punched way above their weight and would certainly interest me in trying a prime lens to really explore the potential of the micro four thirds system as a carry around camera.

HB liked Largs. As a kid, I loved Largs too, that’s nice!

Liane and Marina’s wedding

Well this has been one of my more delayed posts I’m afraid. I am really excited though to finally post the story of the wonderful wedding that Julie and I shot recently. The wedding was in Newbattle Abbey College on the 29th March and the party afterwards was in the lovely Melville Castle Hotel. The delay was due to the small matter of moving house with all of the attendant disarray that entails; anyway, enough of my excuses, lets get on with a brief look at one of the loveliest weddings I have ever attended. Liane and Marina chose to have a Humanist wedding and despite being a Humanist myself, I am embarrassed to tell you that I have never attended a Humanist ceremony before; I certainly wasn’t disappointed, it was very personal and very moving.

These first two pictures are from the grounds of Newbattle which is simply beautiful as a backdrop and features the happy newlyweds, Marina and Liane Edwards-Scott. In the second one with the lovely kiss, they have even been graced by a sunbeam breaking out from the clouds that threatened rain all afternoon.

Photos with (JPM) taken by my assistant and second shooter for the day Julie.

IMG_0187

Thankfully the rain stayed away until evening and the result was some drama in the skies. Aren’t they just gorgeous together! Spending time with them confirms that it isn’t just about appearances, they really are a great couple, fun to be around, and very compatible; they just seem good together.

IMG_0193

However, every wedding day is a story to be told. This one starts with Liane’s brother Gavin meeting us to show us around Melville Castle and to work out the arrangements for photographing the main players. We liked Gavin a lot! This picture was a particular favourite as it seemed to catch his ever present relaxed smile really well.

IMG_9708

We started the day by intruding on Liane as the makeup girl was applying the look for the day. Liane has such striking dark features and amazing eyes that she barely needs any makeup, however it’s a wedding day and makeup is de rigueur I understand.

IMG_9767

Liane’s mum had had her preparation just before Liane and here she is, the finished article looking lovely and answering the question, “where does Liane get those amazing eyes from?”

IMG_9757

Another de rigueur wedding custom is to have a “bestie” in attendance. The duty performed here by close friend Mark.

IMG_9881

The next two show Liane’s outfit which she and Marina designed; the Indian influence was a deliberate theme and works beautifully.

IMG_9901

This one shows the wonderfully textured cloth it is made from.

IMG_9916

Liane is an architect and her designer’s eye is evident in this beautiful laser-cut ring holder which she designed and made for the occasion. (JPM both pics)

IMG_3465

IMG_3482

Every nice outfit needs matching shoes, and these were the perfect pair for the job. (JPM)

IMG_3437

I just love the fine detail on Liane’s jacket. (JPM)

IMG_3428

Preparations almost complete and Mark doing his job impeccably. Little details all safely checked.

IMG_9910

At Liane’s parents’ room, all is ready and Mum, Maureen and Dad, Neil, are ready to go and enjoy the special day.

IMG_9923

Meanwhile Marina was beginning her preparations. I don’t like to tell tales, but certain members of the wedding parties suggested that the oasis of calm that was Chambre Liane was our last taste of tranquility and that Marina’s room would be a madhouse! It turned out to be a vile calumny as Marina was like the Dalai Lama in the calmness stakes.

IMG_9838

I really like this detail of her hair which was just stunning. Who doesn’t like ringlets?

IMG_9831

Three of Marina looking seriously beautiful in a very designer-dress. The Bolero jacket is just the most wonderful shape, and that collar. Wow! (JPM)

IMG_3521

IMG_9926

This one a more thoughtful moment just before her departure. I think Marina looks very “magical” in this one.

IMG_9945

The car is ready by this point and we were able to catch Marina against it. Like everything else at this wedding the car screams style! (JPM)IMG_3532

IMG_9943

And now at Newbattle Abbey College, Marina’s car arriving. (JPM)

IMG_3564-2

I absolutely love this one with brother Eric. The light on their faces as well as the closeness makes a touching sibling moment. (JPM)

IMG_3547

Ready to go in for the ceremony now. This one shows the amazing detail of the back of the dress. (JPM)

IMG_3550

Mark arriving:

Mark delivering love and no doubt bolstering Liane’s confidence in the way a Best Man should! (JPM)

IMG_3681

Marina, her twin sister Kim and brother Eric beginning their walk to the Crypt where the ceremony was about to begin. They all look fantastic. As a photographic aside the fire-exit signs above the door behind them have been cloned out as they were really bright and dominated the image.

IMG_9968

And from behind as they walk. (JPM)

IMG_3589

While Eric leads Marina in, Neil leads Liane in. This lovely man has a one-thousand-watt smile!

IMG_9987

Proud certainly describes this final moment of handover.

IMG_9988Everyone is ready now. Neil here flanked by both mums.
_MG_0156

Marina’s arrival just lights up the Crypt!

IMG_9993

A moment clearly appreciated by watching friends.

_MG_0163

The very touching and personal ceremony begins. From a photographers viewpoint, there was no where else to stand as the crypt was full of seats and anywhere but behind and to the side of the fireplace was blocking peoples’ view. Sometimes you just have to make the best of what you have.

Both girls look really lovely here.

IMG_0007

This one shows the dress detail particularly well.

IMG_0011

Using my 200mm f2.8  I was able to go to the back wall and to lean over one of the more tolerant guests to catch the vows being made. In all of these pictures you will notice the smiles and the happiness in evidence. The ceremony was amusing, informative and touching in equal measures. Did I mention that I liked it?

IMG_0026

IMG_0028

Gavin delivered a lovely reading.

_MG_0173

As rings were exchanged, it was clear that even the Celebrant was enjoying the marriage thoroughly.

IMG_0037

Of course the kiss is the moment that everyone feels is particularly magical. Liane’s smile says that it is magical for her too!

IMG_0041

The next two pictures speak for themselves really: two happy brides!

_MG_0177

IMG_0043

After behaving seriously and having suitable respect for wedding decorum, they just couldn’t resist a characteristic playful touch as they  skipped (literally!) off to begin married life.

_MG_0182

Everyone loved it, even their videographer is grinning here!

_MG_0185

With the ceremony over, you can better appreciate the stunning space it was held in. Marina’s father studied here, and so choosing this venue was a way of virtually including him in the day.

IMG_0061

This is another view of the guests after the ceremony milling about the building as they congratulate Liane and Marina. (JPM)

IMG_3687

And here they are ascending the stairs that you saw in the last picture. I can’t tell you how much I love their outfits and the light reflecting from them as they climb the darker stairs. (JPM)

IMG_3682

And so the most challenging part of a photographer’s day began, the cat herding that is the summoning of guests with champagne in their paws and chatter in their hearts to be processed for the formal shots. I have to say that Liane and Marina’s guests were very good humoured about this.

IMG_0125

With the formal family and friends shots done, we had the customary 25 minutes of time with the brides to catch some romantic shots. On a technical note, the sun came out on and off during the formals, and so I put the sun behind Line and Marina and used remote fill flash held by Julie . It has given both of them lovely “rim lighting” round their hair. That is a very good thing indeed as you will notice if you looked at my pre shoot with them that I loved their hair together; a spiky and curly texturefest!

IMG_0127

They forced themselves, reluctantly to kiss for the camera here. Oh the sacrifices they had to make…

IMG_0134

I said in their preshoot, a good photo session should feature a lot of laughter. A wedding is really tiring for the newlyweds, and they can struggle to stay natural and happy on camera if they let little stresses and worries affect them. Not a problem with these guys, they are just fun to work with and their innate sense of fun tended to dominate.

IMG_0142

More awesome self-sacrifice here. I am touched by them kissing again for the sake of photographic posterity!

IMG_0143

A few of the girls on their own now: I just adore this one of Liane, she looks beautiful and look at her hair…wow!

IMG_0162

I love this one even more if that’s possible. Liane’s eyes are perfect!

IMG_0166

Marina looks ethereal standing here. There’s more than a little hint of Greek Goddess in my view!

IMG_0177

By this point I’m beginning to suspect that they like doing this…

IMG_0184

And the next two, by the fountain, are where we came in…

IMG_0187

Suspicion now confirmed!

IMG_0193

Julie suggested that Marina should have one shot with her hood up. The effect is very classical. I may have to shift from Greek goddess here to one of my favourite fictional characters, Anna Karenina!

IMG_0209

Finally a candid one as they walk back to share the meal with their guests. The outfits just seem to glow with the light behind them.

IMG_0212

Here we are at the meal itself. Starting with a really nice candid of Eric.

_MG_0216

Marina at the top table with a mirror behind in case you miss any of her locks!

IMG_3712

Liane’s dad making a brilliant speech full of wisdom for thriving in marriage!

_MG_0227

I like to think of this as his “goodnight Newbattle”  pose! (JPM)

IMG_3734

Gorgeous sister Kim has the most expressive face ever as she delivered one of the speeches…

_MG_0263

Not just expressive but emotional (with joy) too…

_MG_0273

_MG_0278

Once the tears had subsided, she got on with amusing us all greatly…

_MG_0282

Liane also gave a speech brilliantly linking their forthcoming life to the building process that she as an architect knows so well. Excellent stuff! On a brief photographic note again, the lighting in the hall, in no way matched the colour temperature of the exterior dusk. The result was impossible colour temperature resolution. For the non-photographer either Liane will be an unnatural colour, or the light out of the unavoidable window will be. A bride wins this every time, hence the odd blue of the sky!

_MG_0315

Best man Mark’s dry delivery brought the speeches to a very funny and very affirming close. So personal and wonderful!

_MG_0331

The whole party moved on to to Melville Castle for the final chapter in the day’s festivities. Cutting the wedding cake and of course dancing! This one is just so soft and intimate of the girls prior to them cutting the cake. (JPM)

IMG_3882

Fun and happiness characterise them as usual…

IMG_0277

Apparently one of our brides has a bit of a thing about Dolly P. This cardboard cutout has apparently been around through many life events so far, and so it was seen as very fitting that Dolly should attend the wedding too. Actually Gavin, you look disturbingly well matched in this picture, Dolly would I’m sure be terribly disappointed to know that you are spoken for! (JPM)

IMG_3871

And so to the dancing: (JPM)

IMG_3896

IMG_0302

IMG_0317IMG_0330IMG_0340IMG_0343IMG_0344IMG_0368IMG_0385

This ends my pick of my favourites from Marina and Liane’s wedding. It was a fantastic experience to photograph and everyone we dealt with was lovely to us and really helped us to do our job a smoothly as we could. I certainly wish Marina and Liane well for the future.

Photographically,  the day had its usual surprises and challenges. The Crypt required high ISO settings of 3200 and higher even with f2.8 or better lenses, so photographing in there without great equipment just wouldn’t cut it. The physical layout of the Crypt meant that you simply couldn’t be mobile as a photographer and had to settle for one or perhaps two positions, with restrictions everywhere. The great setting of course makes these challenges worthwhile. I worked around it by moving once only at an opportune moment midway through the ceremony to minimise disruption. The dancing room was darkened down for atmosphere to a point at which autofocus was a distant memory and many of the images were captured more on “spray and pray” than on deliberate moment selection; twas ever thus however. Again, the modern Canon sensors give you at least a sporting chance. During the formals we had the challenge of the sun coming out and causing narrowed eyes and my shadow in the images with no other obvious suitable backdrop. The workaround was crouching low to remove my shadows while helping people to look lower than the sun. Not a perfect solution, and not the most flattering angle always, but by minimising the low angle to just remove the shadow, it gave good enough results.

A word as ever is due to my assistant and second shooter for the day, Julie P McLaughlin. Julie has become a great photographer in her own right and sees situations quickly and beautifully. The day was a partnership and the only reason that more of her images are not available is that she humbly downs her camera to hold remote flash and to arrange people for so much of the day. For your information I have initialled all of Julie’s photos used in the blog. Thanks Julie. Check her baby photos at www.juliepmclaughlin.net

Liane and Marina

Well guess who is going to be lucky enough to photograph this lovely couple’s wedding soon. What, you don’t need three guesses? You’re no fun! Liane and Marina are an Edinburgh couple, although they currently have to spend a lot of time in London. I think that’s why really treasure time back in Edinburgh. This weekend I went to meet them and to do a preshoot with them. As you can tell I had great fun and liked them immensely; we laughed a fair bit, and I always think that’s how a good shoot should be.

IMG_9613

I started with a few shots of each of the girls, just to get them in the mood for photo’s (actually to get them used to me pointing a Canon 5D at them with intent!). Both girls had amazing eyes, and with very different colours. Liane’s eyes just pop in this picture.

IMG_2163

And again, see what I mean!

IMG_2188

This one brings out a real impish, wicked quality in Liane. (I’m sure she is only ever angelic of course). The splash of light on the wall behind just accentuates the amazing curve of her eyebrows. I really love everything about this one from the natural vignette of the lighting to the relaxed intensity of Liane’s expression.

IMG_2200

Now, did I mention eye colours. Check Marina’s baby-blues here. Wow!

IMG_2233

I just love Marina’s sense of style. She strikes me as having a sort of classic beauty, almost like a leading lady in a 40’s film. (if they were in colour).

IMG_2246

Sometimes the picture just does the waxing-lyrical for you:

IMG_2256

Anyway, this was a couple shoot, so now fully relaxed with my camera, we got down to it. These guys are just so lovely together and so complementary in personalities. Their expressions here perfectly capture their personalities with me all afternoon:

IMG_2270

When they were close they just seemed so right for each other. It was a real privilege to try to capture something of their closeness:

IMG_2276

There was a plan to have the equally lovely Talullah in the pictures, but cats just never do what you want, unless clawed backs are your thing. I love cats actually and she is a real cutie, but not so keen on photoboy!

IMG_2284

So “catogrophy” abandoned, it’s back to the sheer cuteness of a couple in love:

IMG_9530

From a photography point of view, you have to adore the shockfest-of-wonderful hair that both Liane and Marina bring to the shoot:

IMG_9533

Here we moved out of their flat, and on to a very cold, windy Calton hill. I can’t tell you how much I love their eyes together in the diffuse cloudy daylight here:

IMG_9560

I should also mention my gratitude for their friend, my namesake, Matt, who helped me by holding a flashgun for me in most of the outdoor shots to ensure that colours popped and eyes had catchlights. This one is looking out to the river Forth. Aren’t they stunning against this background!

IMG_9572

This one made me laugh at myself. (Sadly Liane, Marina and Matt all laughed at me too!). If I have ever photographed you you will know that there is often a little moment in one of my shoots when I get carried away with the excitement of some seemingly little detail. In this one it was Marina leaning forward into Liane while the strong wind blew her skirt backward making a pretty “little girl” pose. I was very tickled and may have briefly gushed (but in a very tough and manly way readers, let me assure you). Again, check the lighting on Liane’s eyes and eyebrows. There are almost too many good things about this couple to gush about! (not that I would, mumble mumble…)

IMG_9573

Liane loves Architecture. I love people, however where the architecture is a bit special I am willing to step back and widen my lens a bit. I love that this sets Liane and Marina so clearly against an Edinburgh Icon.

IMG_9594

That’s Leith and the Forth in the background, not that anyone will notice or care!

IMG_9617

How could anyone not love Liane’s facial expression here. Roll on the wedding!

IMG_9628

Non photographers might not notice the incidence of serendipity here that makes me so so happy. An already beautiful couple here are just rendered irresistible by the almost mirrored curve of the zig-zag of the strand of Marina’s hair andLiane’s  eyebrows. Wow, wow, wow… and talking of eyes…

IMG_9631

This one is less playful somehow, perhaps a little more of a statement moment. Full of assertion and confidence. I would love to come and photograph them again in that same place in 20 years…

IMG_9638

Thanks for sharing the afternoon with me guys. Despite the shockingly cold and miserable photo-conditions, I had a great time and enjoyed getting to know you a little bit. See you soon.

Thanks again Matt.
